Antique Tibetan Thangka Wall Hanging - Turquoise Halo

Product Description

This medium sized ornate and colorful Thangka (see below) depicts a ceremonial image, hand painted by Buddist monks and is surrounded by a woven brocade in embroidered geometric patterns. In great condition with slight wear from aging, crafted in the early 20th century.

A Thangka (pronounced tonka) is a painted or embroidered Buddhist banner or scroll painting, which is hung in a monastery or a family altar and occasionally carried by monks in ceremonial processions. Because they are able to be rolled up like a scroll, monks carried these from monastery to monastery with ease. Elaborate colorful scenes of the depicted deities can be used as teaching tools, describing historical events concerning important Lamas, or retelling myths. Thangkas are often used as a meditation tool to help bring one further down the path to enlightenment.
